Abrey MacKenzie

Aubrey MacKenzie specializes in Japanese antiques. He began collecting with his grandfather, who was a distinguished collector of Northwest Coast Native American material. This early exposure to Indigenous material traditions informed his later focus on mingei (Japanese folk art) and, subsequently, a wider interest with Japanese ceramics, textiles, cabinetry, baskets, lacquerware, and other functional and devotional objects.

MacKenzie’s research has been published by the Smithsonian’s Arctic Studies Center. His most recent contribution examined his acquisition of 30 world-class Ainu ikupausy, situating the collection within broader conversations on cultural continuity, artistry, and regional exchange.

In 2025, he opened Mingei Archive, an antiques gallery in the Sunset neighborhood of San Francisco. The gallery is open most Saturdays and by appointment and serves both emerging and established collectors.

MacKenzie is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Washington (2019). He travels to Japan several times each year to source exemplary works for private clients and for the gallery’s holdings.
